High Court dismisses 'contempt' case filed by CM Suvendu against Biman Banerjee

The Calcutta High Court on Monday dismissed an old contempt of court petition filed by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The case originated during the previous administration when Adhikari served as the Leader of the Opposition and had alleged contempt of court regarding security protocols inside the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Justice Amrita Sinha formally quashed the contempt plea during Monday's hearing.

The legal dispute centered around regulations governing security personnel and firearms within the state assembly premises. Adhikari had previously alleged that central security forces accompanying opposition MLAs were barred from entering the assembly, while state police personnel protecting ruling party members were allowed inside. He filed a contempt petition alleging that the then Assembly Speaker, Biman Banerjee, had violated established judicial directives regarding weapon regulations inside the House.

Refusing to proceed further with the matter, Justice Amrita Sinha formally dismissed the contempt application, observing during the proceedings that people should be allowed to live in peace. While the state's legal counsel noted that repeated notices had gone unanswered by the other party and requested a rule to be issued, the bench declined to extend the litigation and closed the proceedings.
